Circumcision

Pre-procedure Preparation

  • Please call the office after your delivery to schedule the circumcision. The baby should be more than 24 hours old, but not more than 1 week old.
  • Please do not feed the baby for at least 1 hour prior to your appointment for circumcision.
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics currently recommends that analgesia be used for circumcision.
  • The prescription cream EMLA can be used to numb the penis prior to the procedure. If you did not receive a written prescription for this prior to leaving the hospital, the office will gladly phone one in to your pharmacy. Apply this generously to the entire penis 30 minutes before your appointment. Cover with a small piece of saran wrap. The full effects of the cream are seen 45-60 minutes after application.
  • If you are unable to obtain the EMLA cream, the physician may perform a local block just prior to the circumcision, by injecting with lidocaine.
  • We will also provide additional pain relief by giving a pacifier dipped in a sucrose solution for your baby.
  • Additionally, you may wish to give a dose of Tylenol 30 minutes prior to the visit. Consult your pediatrician for the dosage.
  • Read and sign the consent form provided by the office.

Post-procedure Information

  • You may notice an increase in fussiness on the day of the circumcision. You may use Tylenol as needed according to your pediatricians dosage instructions.
  • Some swelling will be expected on the day of the procedure.
  • Some blood may be seen on the diaper, but the blood stain should not be greater than the size of a quarter.
  • Over the first 3-5 days, apply an ointment (Neosporin, polysporin, or Vaseline) with each diaper change to prevent adhesion of the exposed glans to the diaper.
  • The infant should be expected to urinate within 12 hours after the procedure.
  • A crust will be expected to form on the exposed area, which will fall off within the first week.
  • The penis can be cleaned gently with soap and water if needed.
  • Please call the office with any questions or concerns.
